Knights of Columbus Donate 100 Wheelchairs to
Arizona Chapter of Disabled American Veterans
PHOENIX – On Saturday, May 14,
2011 at 11:00 a.m., officers and members of the Arizona Knights of
Columbus will present 100 wheelchairs to representatives from units
of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Department of Arizona. The
donation of wheelchairs will take place during a ceremony to be held
at the state headquarters of the DAV, located at 38 W. Dunlap Road,
Phoenix, Arizona.
The gift of wheelchairs chairs
are the result of donations raised by the Knights of Columbus and
were made available through the American Wheelchair Mission.
Order-wide, the Knights of Columbus have donated several thousand
wheelchairs to people in need in several countries on nearly every
continent. Veteran organizations have been among the groups most
heavily benefiting from this program in this country.
Michael Kingman, Master of the
Arizona District of the Fourth Degree, will make the presentation of
wheelchairs to representatives of the DAV. He will be joined by Herb
Maddock, State Deputy and chief executive for the Arizona State
Council of the Knights of Columbus, and Lawrence Costanzo, Former
Supreme Master of the Fourth Degree. Representing the DAV will be
Arizona State Commander Manny Rodriguez.
“The Knights of Columbus Fourth
Degree are proud to support our veterans, especially those who are
disabled and are not able to receive or afford a wheelchair to
maintain their mobility.” Kingman thanked the representatives for
their sacrifices on behalf of a grateful nation.
According to Kingman, the Arizona
Knights of Columbus plan to continue raising funds to purchase more
wheelchairs to distribute throughout Arizona to veterans in need.
Each wheelchair is purchased through the American Wheelchair Mission
for about $150.00 each.
The Knights of Columbus is the
largest family fraternal service organization with over 1.7 million
members in 10 countries including the Unites States, Puerto Rico,
Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, and Poland. Last year, the Knights
of Columbus donated over $50 million to charities, and its members
donated nearly 69 million man-hours in charitable projects.
